A little preparation goes a long way in making your tattoo session smoother, more comfortable, and better for healing. Here’s everything you need to know about how to take care of yourself beforehand and what to expect on the day of your appointment.

How to Prepare for your appointment

In the days leading up to your session:

  • Eat well. Choose balanced, lighter meals. Avoid anything too heavy right before your appointment.
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water (ideally a gallon a day) helps your skin stay resilient and makes the tattoo process easier.
  • Cut back on caffeine and avoid alcohol. This helps reduce skin sensitivity, irritation, and bleeding.
  • Get good rest. Feeling rested makes a big difference in how your body responds during your session.
  • Moisturize the area daily for a few days leading up to your appointment.

Note: Do not shave the area unless directed – it’s easy to nick or irritate the skin, which can delay your appointment.

  • Avoid sun exposure. A sunburn will make it impossible to tattoo that area and will require rescheduling, which may lead to a forfeited deposit.
